In order to broaden horizons and enhance foreign language proficiency and cross-cultural communication skills, Zhejiang Institute of Economics and Trade, in collaboration with Edinburgh College and Edinburgh Napier University in the UK, organised the Edinburgh Winter Study Camp. The delegation team was invited to visit Edinburgh College and Edinburgh Napier University. At Edinburgh College, students quickly integrated into the school environment and classroom learning through the “Mingle” course, attending a series of international classes alongside local students. This effectively strengthened their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills while broadening their professional knowledge. In addition, the students were invited to tour the Granton Campus of Edinburgh College, where they visited the PASS Theatre, AI Centre, School of Architecture, and School of Fashion. The creative and distinctive designs, together with the student-centred educational approach, left a deep impression on them.

On 12th February, which coincided with the traditional Chinese Lantern Festival, students from both Chinese and UK universities, in addition to completing their regular coursework, jointly organised a unique Lantern Festival special experience activity under the guidance of their teachers. Through engaging interactive games and bilingual presentations about the festival, students showcased the distinctive charm of traditional Chinese culture to nearly 50 international friends, fostering meaningful cultural exchange between China and the UK.

At Edinburgh Napier University, students participated in a variety of courses and academic seminars held across the Craiglockhart and Merchiston campuses. The classes were delivered by distinguished professors from the Business School of Edinburgh Napier University, covering topics such as communicative English, academic writing, Scottish culture and society, and international business communication. With a strong academic focus, the courses provided students with a wealth of practical knowledge and skills, from which they greatly benefited.

Beyond the classroom, the students visited the National Museum of Scotland, where they saw the famous cloned sheep “Dolly”, and took part in a traditional Scottish ceilidh, experiencing first-hand the vibrant exchange and integration of diverse cultures.

In their heartfelt speeches, the participating teachers and doctoral representatives in the UK highly commended the students’ outstanding performance and presented them with certificates of completion. The teachers encouraged the students to study diligently, engage actively with the world, and strive to become high-calibre talents with an international outlook.

Through a ten-day programme of study, the students gained a deep insight into the learning and living styles of local universities. While appreciating the richness of diverse cultures, they also made significant progress in both their language proficiency and professional skills. Visits to renowned universities, academic courses, and interactive exchanges inspired the students to reflect on language learning and career planning, to respect differences and embrace diversity, and to genuinely enhance their cross-cultural communication abilities.

Since signing an MOU with Edinburgh College and Edinburgh Napier University in June 2024, Zhejiang Institute of Economics and Trade has been committed to building a China-UK exchange platform that integrates industry and education. By organising a series of study visits for teachers and students, the university has strengthened the two-way exchange of language, culture, and professional skills, continuously advanced the development of its overseas international communication centre and bilateral study base, and laid a solid foundation for the cultivation of high-quality joint China-UK talent development programmes.
